Martin Kaye

From design to screen print

The British typography enthusiast Martin Kaye (1932–1989) designed and screen-printed all posters for Paradiso from 1972 to 1983. Kaye’s workshop was located in the basement of Paradiso, where he printed posters while, right above him, artists such as Herman Brood, Blondie, The Undertones, John Hiatt, The Nits, and many other musicians performed.

Characteristic of his work were the custom-designed letters he cut himself in screen-print film—bold, clear, and large. His use of gradient printing, which created a colorful rainbow effect, became his trademark. Today, prominent printers and designers regard him as one of the major figures in the history of Dutch screen-printing art.

Printed Heritage now available for Collectors!

The print run of around 100 posters was distributed across Amsterdam, with only a limited number preserved from Martin Kaye’s personal archive. In an effort to preserve and share this unique legacy, a selection of original Paradiso posters is now available for purchase from the private collection of Ed Visser, curator of the Paradiso Posters Collection.

Each vintage Paradiso screen-printed poster is a unique work of art. It serves as a bridge between past and present, musician and fan, artist and viewer, venue and visitor. Don’t miss the chance to own a piece of rock history yourself.
